Spring brings mild temperatures, blooming flowers, and lower tourist numbers. Autumn delivers cooler clear days ideal for Jiuzhaigou's famous foliage colors and the best visibility at highland scenic areas.

January–February and late June–August at lower elevations

January and February are cold and foggy in Chengdu with reduced visibility. The summer rainy season (June–August) brings heavy rainfall, road closures from landslides in mountain areas, and crowds at Sichuan Basin destinations.

Climate Overview

Sichuan has dramatically varied climates due to its geography. The Sichuan Basin (Chengdu and surrounds) has a subtropical monsoon climate with mild winters, hot humid summers, and low sunshine hours due to persistent cloud cover. Western Sichuan's highlands have an alpine or plateau climate with cold winters, cool summers, intense UV radiation, and dramatic daily temperature swings. Jiuzhaigou and the northern mountains experience heavier snowfall and can close seasonally.

Cold and foggy in Chengdu; snow blankets western Sichuan. Quiet tourist season. Chinese New Year celebrations in late January/early February.

Feb

Still cold and often foggy; plum blossoms begin at Du Fu Thatched Cottage. Spring Festival is the year's biggest holiday — book everything months ahead if visiting.

Mar

12°C/54°F (Chengdu)
Spring begins, temperature climbs, and visibility improves. Parks bloom with plum and cherry blossoms. Pandas are active at the breeding base.

Apr

17°C/63°F (Chengdu)
Pleasant and sunny. Excellent for Chengdu city exploration and day trips to Leshan and Dujiangyan. Rapeseed fields near Chengdu glow yellow.

May

21°C/70°F (Chengdu)
Warm and very pleasant. One of the best months to visit. Alpine wildflowers begin at higher elevations. Long holiday weekend (May 1–3) is busy.

Rainy season begins; humid in Chengdu basin. Western highland meadows are lush and green — excellent for Tagong and Siguniang. Road closures possible in mountains.

Hottest month — very humid in Chengdu; head to the highlands to escape. Daocheng Yading has cool, clear conditions. Peak tourist season.

Aug

Similar to July — hot and humid. Highest rainfall month, most risk of road disruptions. Highland areas cool and beautiful with summer flowers.

Sep

Temperatures moderate; rains ease. Early autumn colors appear at Jiuzhaigou. One of the best months to visit overall.

Oct

Peak foliage at Jiuzhaigou — world-class autumn color display. National Golden Week (Oct 1–7) brings massive crowds; mid-to-late October is ideal.

Nov

Cool and crisp. Late foliage still visible at Jiuzhaigou in early November. Highland areas receive first significant snowfall. Fewer tourists.

Dec

Cold in Chengdu but rarely freezing. Xiling Snow Mountain ski resort opens. Jiuzhaigou may partially close due to ice. Hot pot season at its best.

🌸 Spring

Mar–May

The best season for most of Sichuan. Chengdu warms pleasantly with blooming parks and the panda base's bamboo is fresh and green. Mount Emei's lower slopes burst with wildflowers. Highland areas begin to thaw from April.

Tips: Pack layers — mornings can be cool. Jiuzhaigou reopens from mid-March after any winter closure. Book accommodation in advance for May holiday weekend.

Jun–Aug

Hot and humid in Chengdu (35°C+). Peak tourist season with long queues at major attractions. Western highland areas like Daocheng are refreshingly cool and lush with alpine flowers in July. Rainy season brings occasional flooding and road closures on mountain routes.

Tips: Escape Chengdu heat by heading to highland areas. Carry rain gear and check road conditions before mountain travel. Jiuzhaigou in summer is crowded but lush green.

🍂 Fall

Sep–Nov

The most spectacular season in Sichuan. Jiuzhaigou's autumn foliage (late September to November) produces the park's legendary riot of gold, red, and orange reflected in turquoise lakes. Chengdu's temperature becomes pleasantly cool. Highland snowfall begins in October.

Tips: Book Jiuzhaigou for late September to early November — this is the world's most spectacular autumn foliage display. National Golden Week (Oct 1–7) is extremely crowded — aim for mid-October instead.

Dec–Feb

Cold and misty in Chengdu (rarely dropping below 0°C). Mountain areas including Jiuzhaigou may have reduced access or temporary closures. Hailuogou Glacier and skiing at Xiling Snow Mountain are winter-specific highlights. Chengdu's festive spring preparations begin in January.

Tips: Pack warm layers and waterproof gear. Many mountain areas have dramatic winter scenery but require extra preparation. Chinese New Year (January–February) brings festive atmosphere but overcrowding and price surges.
