People's Park (Renmin Park)

People's Park (Renmin Park) in Qingyang District is Chengdu's most emblematic urban park, built on the site of a former Qing-dynasty parade ground and now a daily gathering place for local life rather than a conventional sightseeing stop. Paved paths wind past ornamental lakes, a monument to the 1911 Railway Protection Movement, and open-air spaces where locals practice tai chi, ballroom dance, and mahjong throughout the day. The park's best-known feature is Heming Teahouse, a lakeside teahouse where bamboo chairs cluster under trees and visitors can watch or try Chengdu's traditional ear-cleaning service alongside a cup of jasmine tea. A visit exploring the main paths, the lake, and a tea stop takes one to two hours; visitors can spend considerably longer simply people-watching from a teahouse seat. The park is at its liveliest and most characteristic in the mid-morning, when local retirees gather for tea, cards, and conversation; it is calmer but less atmospheric in the early morning before these daily rituals begin. Weekends bring larger crowds, including families and younger visitors, while weekday mornings show Chengdu's older generation's daily routines most clearly.
