Chengdu Museum

Chengdu Museum, opposite Tianfu Square in Qingyang District, is the city's main comprehensive history museum, covering Chengdu's development from prehistory through the Qing dynasty and into the twentieth century across several floors. Highlights include a large-scale reconstructed street scene from the Republic era, a folk-custom exhibition on Sichuan opera and local craftsmanship, and rotating special exhibitions that periodically bring in loans from other major Chinese institutions. Because entry is free but reservation-based, visitors typically pass through a quick ticket-collection and security process at the entrance before proceeding to the permanent galleries, which are organized in a roughly chronological loop. A thorough visit covering the main permanent galleries takes two to three hours; visitors focused on a single special exhibition can do it in under an hour. The reconstructed old-Chengdu street scene, with its shopfronts and everyday-life dioramas, is the most photographed gallery, while the top-floor galleries tend to be quieter than the ground-floor introductory halls. The museum is busiest on weekend afternoons and during the Friday and Saturday extended evening hours, when it stays open until 20:30; weekday afternoons, particularly outside school holidays, are the calmest time to visit.
