Laoshan Scenic Area
Granite peaks rising straight out of the Yellow Sea, Laoshan is China's highest coastal mountain and one of Daoism's sacred mountains. Taiqing Palace, an active Daoist temple complex dating to the Song dynasty, anchors the southern coastal section, while Mingxia Cave and a cable car serve the higher granite ridgelines. Fishing villages and seafood restaurants line the coast road below.

Jiaozhou Bay Bridge and the West Coast Skyline
At 26.7 km, the Jiaozhou Bay Bridge was among the world's longest sea-crossing bridges when it opened in 2011, linking Qingdao's urban core to the Huangdao/West Coast New Area skyline. The drive across offers open views of Jiaozhou Bay and the container port, and pairs well with a half-day loop into Huangdao's beaches or wetland park.

Getting there
Transport options for day trips.
- Tours
- Small-group day tours from Qingdao covering Laoshan (with cable car and Taiqing Palace) or the Huangdao coastline are bookable via Trip.com or Klook, typically ¥250-450 (~$35-63) per person including transport and an entrance ticket
- Private
- A private car and driver is the most flexible option for Lingshan Mountain, Pingdu or a Huangdao beach-and-wetland loop, typically ¥400-700 (~$56-98) for a full day depending on distance
- Public
- Qingdao Metro Line 1 (via the Jiaozhou Bay subsea tunnel) covers Huangdao quickly; Metro Line 11 reaches Jimo; Laoshan, Jiaozhou and Pingdu rely on public buses from downtown terminals rather than the metro
- Rental
- Self-driving is legally possible with a valid Chinese or internationally recognised permit accepted in China, but most visitors find a private driver or Didi simpler given local driving style and largely Chinese-only road signage outside the main highways

Day trip tips
Make the most of your excursions.
Laoshan is the only day trip directly comparable to Qingdao's own top attractions in popularity, so arriving early (before 09:00) helps avoid the biggest tour-group crowds at Taiqing Palace
Group the Huangdao-side day trips (Jiaozhou Bay Bridge, Tangdao Bay Wetland Park, Golden Sand Beach/Xuejiadao) into a single full-day loop using a private car or Didi, since they sit close together across the bay
Lingshan Mountain and Pingdu are considerably less visited than Laoshan and have far less English signage or tourist infrastructure; downloading offline maps and saving destination addresses in Chinese characters beforehand is essential
Confirm current bus schedules and last-return times before setting out for Jiaozhou or Pingdu, since these regional routes run less frequently in the evening than city buses
Bring cash alongside a funded Alipay/WeChat Pay account for smaller rural vendors and family-run seafood stalls in Xuejiadao or Jiaozhou, which may not take foreign cards
