The Confucius Temple stands on Queli Street in Qufu, in Jining prefecture of Shandong province, China, and forms part of the UNESCO World Heritage site that includes the Kong Family Mansion and the Cemetery of Confucius. The complex runs along a long north-south axis of courtyards, gateways and halls, and is one of the largest ancient building groups in China. Photographers are drawn to the colour contrast of red walls and yellow glazed roof tiles against ancient cypress trees, some of them centuries old, and to the Dacheng Hall with its carved stone dragon pillars, the Apricot Altar and the many stone tablet pavilions. Frames vary from long axial views through successive gates, to details of roof ridges and tablet inscriptions. Morning light suits the complex best, with sun angling across the courtyards and softening shadows before the midday glare, while late afternoon offers warm light on the western walls. Overcast conditions and light rain can bring out the rich red of the walls and the green of the cypresses. The best seasons are March to May and September to November, when weather is mild and skies are often clear, whereas summer is hot and winter can be bitterly cold. Crowds are the main difficulty: tour groups arrive from mid-morning, especially on weekends, public holidays and during the September Confucius festival period, and courtyards near the Dacheng Hall become congested, so early arrival at opening yields the quietest conditions. Tripods are frequently restricted or discouraged inside the temple because of the crowds and cultural-heritage rules, so visitors should check with staff at the gate and be prepared to shoot handheld. Drones are prohibited around the heritage complex. Admission is charged, with a combined ticket for the three Confucian sites in the range of about 150 yuan, and prices should be confirmed at the ticket office. The temple is mostly flat with stone-paved courtyards and some steps at hall entrances, and restrooms and drinking water are found near the entrance areas.
