Penglai Pavilion (Penglaige) stands on a clifftop overlooking the Bohai Sea in the Penglai District of Yantai, Shandong, China. The complex dates from the Ming dynasty and is tied to the legend of the Eight Immortals, who are said to have crossed the sea from here. Penglai was long imagined as a home of immortals, and the coast's rare mirage effect, when distant islands seem to hang in the air, reinforced the tradition.

The scenic area includes the main pavilion, a series of temples and halls built up the hillside, stone tablets and inscriptions from poets and officials, and the nearby Penglai Water City, a Ming dynasty naval fortress with ramparts and a harbour gate. Visitors walk uphill through courtyards to the pavilion for views over the sea, then explore the Water City and its museum. A visit generally takes around three hours. Admission is about CNY 120 in peak season and CNY 100 in the off-season. The most reliable views are on clear autumn days; the mirage phenomenon is rare and appears in late spring and summer, so it cannot be planned. Summer and holiday weekends are the busiest, and mornings are calmer. Photographers work from the cliff edges, the pavilion against the sea and the fortress walls. From Yantai city centre, buses take about 1.5 hours; alternatively, high-speed rail runs to Penglai station, followed by a taxi of about 15 minutes. Verify prices and hours on the day, since winter hours are shorter.
