Laoshan is a coastal mountain range in the Laoshan District of Qingdao, Shandong, China, rising to 1,133 metres at its highest point, Juefeng, and dropping straight to the Yellow Sea. It has long been associated with Daoism, and legends of immortals and hermits shaped its reputation. The scenic area is divided into several routes, of which the Taiqing, Jufeng and Beijiushui routes are the best known, and entry is charged per route at about CNY 120. The Taiqing route leads to Taiqing Palace, a Daoist temple complex with a history reaching back more than two thousand years, with old cypress, ginkgo and camellia trees in its courtyards. The Jufeng route climbs among granite peaks with views out to sea, and the Beijiushui route follows a stream through pools and waterfalls. Laoshan is also known for its mineral spring water, which is bottled and sold in China. Visitors normally spend a full day and plan for hiking, so sturdy shoes and water are important. Weather can be misty and cool even in summer, and sea fog sometimes obscures the peaks. Spring and autumn provide clear views and comfortable temperatures, while summer weekends and holidays draw large crowds. Photographers favour the granite ridges meeting the sea, the temple courtyards and the waterfalls along Beijiushui. Bus 304 or 502 from central Qingdao reaches Taiqing Palace in around one and a half hours, and a route by metro and bus is also possible. Visitors should verify prices and hours on the day.
