Rizhao Coast Water Sports

Rizhao, a coastal city in southeastern Shandong province, is known in China as a seaside destination with a long, gently shelving sandy beach, and the stretch around Sunshine Beach in Donggang District is where most water-sports rentals are found. Beach operators offer jet-ski hire, banana-boat rides and beginner surfing or bodyboarding, usually sold by the activity for one to three hours of total beach time. Most of these activities are passive or beginner-level. Banana-boat rides and guided jet-ski sessions need no experience, while surfing depends on small summer waves and is best treated as an introduction rather than a serious surf trip. Participants should be able to swim, and operators usually set minimum ages and weight limits, particularly for jet skis, so families should ask on the day. Equipment such as life jackets, boards and the craft itself is supplied by the operator, while visitors bring swimwear, a rash guard, sun cream and a towel. The operators are small beach businesses rather than internationally certified schools, so visitors should not expect formal surf-instructor qualifications; instead, check that life jackets are issued, that a rescue boat or staff member is stationed on the water, and that jet-ski rides stay inside the marked zone. Safety briefings are short and verbal, and rescue relies on the operator's own boats near the shore. Prices run about CNY 100-300 per activity. The best season is June to September, when water is warm and services are open; outside summer, many stands close. Conditions to avoid include typhoon warnings, red-flag or no-swim notices on the beach, strong offshore wind, and jellyfish or algae blooms, which occasionally affect the Yellow Sea coast. Rizhao is reached by high-speed train to Rizhao station, and taxis or buses link the station with the beachfront, making the coast a simple day or weekend excursion from other Shandong cities.
