Shuyuanmen Cultural Street

Shuyuanmen Cultural Street runs from the City Wall's South Gate toward the Forest of Steles Museum in Beilin District, its shopfronts built in a Ming-and-Qing architectural style specifically to house calligraphy, ink-painting, seal-carving, brush-making and antique dealers. It's one of the more focused shopping streets in Xi'an, less about souvenirs generally and more about traditional scholarly and artistic crafts: shops sell everything from mass-produced ink-painting prints at a few dozen yuan to serious hand-carved seals, scroll paintings and antique curios running into the hundreds or low thousands of yuan. Many shops offer while-you-wait custom seal carving with a customer's name in Chinese characters, a popular purchase for visitors. The street sits directly between the South Gate and the Forest of Steles Museum, China's largest collection of stone stelae, making it a natural walking route between the two. Quality and pricing vary significantly between shops, and bargaining is generally expected outside of clearly marked fixed-price antique stores. The street is busiest on weekends and holiday afternoons, and quieter -- better for browsing without pressure -- on weekday mornings.
