South Peak, at roughly 2,154 m, is the highest point on the mountain and sits beside the entrance to the Plank Walk in the Sky. East Peak is the traditional spot for sunrise viewing on an overnight climb, while West Peak offers the most direct cable car descent back down. The full loop covers 6–8 km of stone-cut steps and ridge trail with cumulative elevation change well beyond the horizontal distance would suggest, given the constant climbing and descending between summits. Iron chains are fixed along the most exposed stretches, and the path is rarely wider than a few people at once, so the route can bottleneck on weekends and holidays. Weather on the open ridge shifts quickly, and management closes sections after snow, ice, or high wind, so a flexible day is worth planning around a ridge walk attempt.

  • Layer clothing, since the exposed ridge is noticeably windier and colder than the base
  • Check conditions before attempting the full loop after recent rain or snow

When to visit

Clear weekday mornings in spring or autumn offer the best visibility and smallest crowds on the narrow ridge sections.

Accessibility

Not wheelchair- or stroller-accessible; narrow stone-cut ridge paths with significant exposure throughout.

Frequently asked questions

Can I do the five-peaks loop in a single day?

Yes, using the cable cars to access the ridge rather than hiking the full base ascent, most fit hikers complete the loop in 5–7 hours.

What is Jinsuo Pass?

It is the saddle connecting North Peak to the other four summits, where visitors traditionally fasten padlocks to the chain railings for safety and good fortune.

Is the ridge walk safe?

Chain handrails are fixed along the most exposed sections, but the path has real drop-offs and narrows considerably in places, so it is not recommended in poor weather or for those uncomfortable with heights.
