Bell Tower of Xi'an

The Bell Tower stands at the exact center of Xi'an's old city, at the intersection of the four main streets running to the City Wall's East, West, South, and North Gates, built in 1384 during the early Ming dynasty and relocated to its present site in 1582. The three-tiered wooden structure, roughly 36 meters tall including its brick base, is one of the largest and best-preserved bell towers in China, its dark timber eaves and glazed roof tiles rising above the roundabout traffic that now circles its base. Historically the tower housed a large bronze bell rung each morning to mark the start of the day, paired with the nearby Drum Tower's evening drumbeat that signaled curfew; the original Tang-dynasty bell, cracked and retired from public display, is now held at the Xi'an Beilin Museum, and a large replica bell hangs in its place today. Visitors climb an internal staircase to the tower's upper level, where a small museum displays a collection of ancient bronze bells, Ming and Qing furniture, and rotating cultural exhibits, alongside a viewing platform offering close-up views down each of the four radiating streets and across to the Drum Tower a short distance to the northwest. A brief bell-ringing and drum performance is held on the tower's platform at scheduled intervals throughout the day, drawing a modest crowd for the roughly 10-minute show. Because the tower sits on a small island in the middle of a busy traffic roundabout, access is via an underground pedestrian tunnel connecting to the base. A full visit, including the museum level and viewing platform, typically takes 30 minutes to an hour, making it easy to combine with the nearby Drum Tower and Muslim Quarter on the same walk. At night, the tower is dramatically lit, and the illuminated silhouette against the surrounding modern high-rises is one of the most photographed views in central Xi'an.
