Hanzhong Old Town & Zhang Liang Temple

Hanzhong sits 290km southwest of Xi'an across the Qinling range, reached in about 1.5 to 2 hours on the high-speed train from Xi'an North Railway Station, with Zhang Liang Temple a further 1.5 hours by taxi or local bus into Liuba County. The morning train ride crosses tunnels and viaducts through the Qinling Mountains, arriving in Hanzhong's old town, which retains sections of its historic city wall and a grid of streets dating to the Han dynasty when the city served as a strategic base. A midday stop in the old town allows time for lunch and a walk along the surviving wall sections before continuing on to Zhang Liang Temple, a mountainside complex of pavilions, courtyards, and ancient cypress and pine trees dedicated to Zhang Liang, the Han dynasty strategist who advised Liu Bang in founding the dynasty and later retreated from court life. The temple grounds wind up a forested hillside with multiple halls linked by stone paths, taking roughly ninety minutes to explore fully. Spring and autumn bring the mildest weather for the mountain crossing and the outdoor walking at both stops, avoiding the summer humidity and winter cold typical of this transitional zone between northern and southern China. Hanzhong is known for liangpi, a cold rice-noodle dish unique to the region, along with Hanzhong rice noodles (mianpi) served in the old town's small restaurants, making the city center a natural lunch stop before the onward trip to the temple.
