About Yinchuan

Yinchuan is the capital of the Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region, a Yellow River oasis city set between the Helan Mountains and the Ordos plateau. The old city around the Gulou (Drum Tower), Yuhuangge and Nanmen Square keeps the Hui food culture of hand-grabbed lamb and offal soup, while the newer Jinfeng district and Yuehai Bay offer lakes, museums and international hotels. West of the city lie the Western Xia Imperial Tombs, the Zhenbeibu film-set fortress and the Helan Mountain rock carvings; Shuidonggou and Shapotou are day trips.

Safety information

INFO

Yinchuan has very low violent crime and is among the safest provincial capitals for solo travelers. The common risks are petty theft in crowds, overcharging by unmetered taxis, and traffic from electric scooters that often run on pavements.

INFO

Carry the passport at all times; hotels, trains, the Ningxia Museum and many sights require it. Keep a photo copy on the phone.

INFO

Register accommodation: hotels register foreign guests with the police automatically; guesthouses and private rentals must be registered within 24 hours, and the host usually handles this.

INFO

Dial 120 for an ambulance, 110 for police and 119 for fire. Operators speak limited English, so show the address in Chinese; screenshot the hotel's Chinese address in the Didi or Amap app.

INFO

Download a translation app (Baidu Translate or Google Translate offline pack) and a VPN before arrival; Google, WhatsApp, Gmail and Instagram are blocked in mainland China.

INFO
