Getting Around Ningxia 2026

From airport to backstreets: the full transport picture for Ningxia, with current fares.

Ningxia Hui Autonomous Region is a compact, landlocked province in north-central China, straddling the upper Yellow River between the Gobi and Tengger deserts and the Helan Mountains. Home to a large ethnic Hui Muslim population alongside the Han majority, Ningxia blends desert scenery, Yellow River irrigation culture, Xixia (Western Xia) dynasty heritage, and a fast-growing wine industry into one of China's most underrated travel regions.

Public
Yinchuan runs a single BRT line plus a city bus network covering the Xingqing, Jinfeng and Xixia districts; high-speed rail (Yinchuan-Lanzhou and Yinchuan-Xi'an lines) links Yinchuan with Zhongwei, Wuzhong and onward to Lanzhou and Xi'an, but buses remain the only public option to most desert and heritage sites outside the city
Taxi
Metered taxis are plentiful and inexpensive in Yinchuan; DiDi (滴滴出行) ride-hailing works reliably in the city but coverage thins out fast once away from Yinchuan, Zhongwei and Wuzhong proper
Rental
A rental car or a hired car-with-driver is the most practical way to combine several desert and Helan Mountain sites in one day, since public transport to Shapotou, Shahu, Zhenbeibu and Shuidonggou is infrequent or nonexistent
Walking
Central Yinchuan (Xingqing District, the old town near Nanmen and Yuhuangge) is flat and walkable, but the city is spread out and most desert, lake and historic attractions are well outside walking range

Transportation details

Full breakdown of how to get around.

Ningxia is compact by Chinese standards, with Yinchuan as its transport hub. Yinchuan Hedong International Airport connects the region to the rest of China, and a high-speed rail spine (the Yinchuan-Lanzhou and Yinchuan-Xi'an lines) links Yinchuan with Zhongwei, Wuzhong and beyond. Inside Yinchuan a BRT line and city buses cover the built-up districts, and DiDi ride-hailing plus metered taxis fill the gaps. Reaching the region's signature desert, lake and historic sites - Shapotou, Shahu, the Helan Mountain rock art, and the Western Xia Tombs - generally means a long-distance bus, a chartered driver, or a rental car, since public transit does not reach most of them directly.

Transport tips

Travel smarter, not harder.

Tip

Download the DiDi app (available in English) before arriving - it is the most reliable way to get a car in Yinchuan without speaking Mandarin

Tip

Buy high-speed rail tickets on the Trip.com app or 12306 (China Railway's official app) a day or two ahead, especially for weekend travel to Zhongwei

Tip

Long-distance buses to Shapotou, Qingtongxia and Guyuan leave from Yinchuan South Bus Station (银川汽车南站) near Nanmen Square - confirm the departure gate, as schedules shift seasonally

Tip

A hired car with driver (roughly CNY 500-700 / USD 75-104 for a full day) is the easiest way to cover the Helan Mountain - Xixia Tombs - Zhenbeibu loop plus Shahu in a single day

Tip

Carry your passport at all times - hotels, train stations and some scenic-area ticket offices in Ningxia require ID checks for foreign visitors

Tip

Public transport thins out sharply after dark outside central Yinchuan; arrange a return taxi or driver in advance for evening trips back from desert sites

Tip

Fuel up before heading into the Tengger Desert or Helan Mountain routes - petrol stations are sparse once off the main highways
