Macau is a Special Administrative Region of China on the Pearl River Delta, about 60 km west of Hong Kong. Its compact peninsula and the islands of Taipa and Coloane combine a UNESCO-listed Portuguese colonial old town, Cantonese temples and street food, and the glittering casino resorts of the Cotai Strip.
Accommodation overview
Macau's accommodation falls into three clusters. The Peninsula (Historic Centre, Senado Square, Outer Harbour) offers older 2-4 star hotels and small pousadas within walking distance of the UNESCO sights and the Border Gate and ferry terminals. Cotai, the reclaimed land between Taipa and Coloane, holds the casino resorts such as The Venetian, The Parisian and Studio City, with large rooms, malls, shows and free shuttle buses. Taipa Village and Coloane are quieter, with boutique hotels near Portuguese-style restaurants and Hac Sa Beach. Rates are strongly seasonal: weekends, Golden Week and Chinese New Year run well above midweek prices, and non-casino 5-star hotels often undercut the big resorts. Prices are in patacas (MOP), and Hong Kong dollars are accepted at par.
- Budget
- MOP 350-900 per night (approx USD 44-113) for older 2-3 star hotels in the old city and a few hillside pousadas; weekend rates run 30-80% above midweek
- Mid-range
- MOP 450-1,300 per night (approx USD 56-163) for 3-4 star hotels on the Peninsula, in Taipa Village and at the foot of Cotai
- Luxury
- MOP 1,100-9,000 per night (approx USD 138-1,125) for casino-resort and non-casino 5-star hotels; Macau's overall average room rate in May 2026 was MOP 1,387 (approx USD 173) and five-star hotels averaged MOP 1,556 (approx USD 194)
- Where to stay
- Macau Peninsula (Inner Harbour and old city) for walkable heritage sights, Taipa Village for food and quieter streets, Cotai for resort amenities and shows, Coloane for beach and hiking peace; Cotai and the Peninsula are linked by free resort shuttles and by bus

Check rates on Booking.comBooking tips
Get the best deals and avoid common mistakes.
Book midweek (Sun-Thu) stays where possible; the same room can be 30-60% cheaper than on Friday and Saturday nights.
Avoid Golden Week (1-7 October), Lunar New Year, Labour Day week (1-5 May) and the November Macau Grand Prix weekend, when rates rise 2-4 times and most mid-range hotels sell out.
Check official hotel websites and booking apps (Trip.com, Agoda, Booking.com) side by side - Macau resorts often run member and mainland-China rates that are cheaper than public rates.
If arriving from Hong Kong, free hotel shuttles meet the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge border and the ferry terminals (Macau Outer Harbour, Taipa Ferry Terminal); no booking needed for the bus, bring your passport.
Casino-resort rooms usually include pool access but tax and service charge may be added (typically 10% service plus 5% government tax); confirm total price before paying.
Check Cotai versus Peninsula before booking: the two areas are about 10-20 minutes apart by taxi or free shuttle, and many Peninsula sights (Senado Square, A-Ma, Ruins of St Paul's) are 30+ minutes from Cotai without a taxi or bus.
REM (formerly Countdown, formerly Hard Rock Hotel) at City of Dreams is under renovation and was scheduled to reopen in the second half of 2026; do not book it until the hotel confirms dates.
