Jilin is a province in northeast China bordering North Korea and Russia, known for Changbai Mountain and its Heaven Lake crater, Changchun's Manchukuo-era palace and film heritage, Jilin City's winter rime ice, and the Korean-Chinese culture of Yanbian. The Tumen and Yalu rivers form its southern frontier, and Goguryeo tombs at Ji'an are UNESCO World Heritage sites. Winters are long and cold, with excellent skiing.
Jilin has a cold continental monsoon climate with long, dry, very cold winters and short, warm, rainy summers. Changchun in the central plain averages about -15 C in January and 23 C in July, with most of its roughly 600-700 mm of annual rain falling in June to August. Jilin City is a little milder and famous for winter rime ice on the Songhua River. Yanji in the east is slightly less cold in winter but has colder nights and more fog. Changbai Mountain, at 2,000-2,700 m, is far colder and windier: the summit is snow-covered from roughly late September to early June, and Heaven Lake is often hidden in cloud. Spring is short, windy and dry; autumn is clear and the best season for foliage.
Best time to visit
Summary: Late June to August for Changbai Mountain and Heaven Lake (though clear views are never guaranteed), mid-September to early October for autumn colour, and January to February for skiing and rime ice.
Best: Late
Avoid: 1-7 October for crowds, March-April for mud and closed mountain roads, and November for cold, grey weather
Peak Season: July-August, 1-7 October and the ski season from January to February
Notes: Reports in 2026 state that access to Tianchi is closed during strong winds, fog, rain, snow or icy roads, and that the full clear blue-lake view is available only about 50 days a year. The north and west slopes are generally open year-round except in extreme weather, while the south slope is seasonal (roughly June to October); verify status with the Changbai Mountain management committee before travel.
