Xianghai National Nature Reserve, in Tongyu County near Baicheng in western Jilin province, protects a large mosaic of marsh, reed beds, lakes and grassland that is an important stopover and breeding area for cranes. Red-crowned cranes and white-naped cranes feed across the wetland, and during migration other species of cranes and waterbirds also pass through, which makes the reserve a key site for bird photography in northeast China.

The principal frames are cranes standing or feeding in shallow water with reed beds behind, birds in flight at dawn, and silhouettes against a low sun across open marsh. Sunrise and sunset provide the best light, with warm side-light at low angles on plumage and long shadows across the water; on clear evenings the reeds turn gold and the cranes appear in outline. Spring, from April to May, and autumn, from September to October, are the best seasons, with courtship displays in spring and large flocks gathering before migration in autumn. Because cranes are wary, long lenses are necessary, and a lens of 500 mm or more on a tripod or monopod is typical; photographers also benefit from muted clothing and slow movement. Visitors should stay on designated paths and use the observation areas, since nesting and feeding areas are protected and disturbance is closely controlled. The reserve is remote from major cities, so photographers usually base themselves in Tongyu or Baicheng and travel out before dawn. Crowds are small outside of public holidays, which means tripod positions are rarely contested, though local guides or reserve staff may be needed to reach the best marsh locations. Entry tickets and any vehicle or boat fees vary and should be confirmed locally. Drones are not permitted in nature reserves because they disturb wildlife, and tripod use is generally allowed on the open paths. Mosquitoes can be intense in summer, so insect repellent is advisable.
