Songhua Lake (松花湖)

Songhua Lake is the Fengman Reservoir on the Second Songhua River, about 20 kilometres from Jilin City in Jilin province, northeast China. It covers roughly 550 square kilometres and is far larger than any sea cove: a long, branching body of cool, deep water set among forested hills, islands and small fishing villages. The water is fresh and fairly clear, taking on a green-blue tone in summer. The shoreline varies from rocky and wooded banks to landscaped resort frontage, and it is not a sandy-beach destination in the usual sense. Bathing is allowed only at designated resort bathing areas, where it is supervised in July and August, so most visitors come for the scenery, boat cruises and lakeside leisure rather than open-water swimming. Because the reservoir is so large, wind can raise a chop on open stretches, while the side bays are sheltered. The atmosphere is relaxed and holiday-oriented, suited to families and groups staying at lakeside resort hotels instead of a surf or party scene. Amenities include boat cruises, lakeside resort hotels, fishing and water sports in season, restaurants serving fresh lake fish, and viewing platforms near the Fengman dam. Services cluster around the resort areas, so facilities are thinner on remote shores. Access is by train from Changchun to Jilin City, then a taxi or DiDi to the scenic area, which takes around 40 minutes and costs roughly CNY 40-70. Parking is available at the main scenic and resort areas. Cruises set out from piers near the dam and resort districts, and the choice of route determines how much of the lake is seen. June to September is the main season, with warm weather and supervised bathing in high summer. Autumn brings colour on the surrounding hills, while winter transforms the area into a snow and ice destination. Visitors planning a cruise should check schedules locally, bring sun protection in summer, and allow a full day to see more than one part of the lake.
