A Ramsar wetland of lakes, reed beds and grassland in Tongyu County, famed for migrating red-crowned cranes and white cranes in April and October.
Xianghai National Nature Reserve (Xianghai Guojiaji Ziran Baohuqu) is a large wetland protected area in Xianghai Town, Tongyu County, Baicheng, in western Jilin Province. It is recognised as a Ramsar wetland of international importance and contains a mosaic of lakes, reed beds, marshes, grassland, sand dunes and poplar groves on the edge of the Horqin grassland. The reserve is a major stopover for migratory birds, and it is best known for red-crowned cranes, white cranes and other crane species that pass through in April and October. Many other waterbirds, including geese, swans, herons and ducks, can be seen, and the reserve is a favourite for birdwatchers and wildlife photographers. Paths, observation towers and boat routes allow visitors to explore parts of the reserve, though it is large and unmarked in places, so a guide is advisable for bird walks. A visit usually takes half a day. Admission is about CNY 60, with students at about half price, and it is open roughly 8:00 to 17:00. The reserve is about one and a half hours from Baicheng by taxi or hired car, and a day trip is the usual way to visit. The best periods are April to May and September to October for cranes, while summer offers lush reeds and nesting birds. Early morning and late afternoon give the best chances for wildlife and soft light. Binoculars, a telephoto lens, sun protection and insect repellent are useful. Visitors should keep distance from birds, avoid loud noise and follow reserve rules to limit disturbance during sensitive migration and breeding periods.
