Wusong Island (Rime Island) is a small islet in the Songhua River at Caoqing Village, Longtan District, Jilin City, Jilin Province. It is best known for the rime frost (wusong) that coats trees and shrubs from late December to early March. The phenomenon occurs because warm water released from the Fengman reservoir upstream keeps the river from freezing, and in very cold air the rising vapour condenses and freezes onto branches as thick white crystals.

A Songhua River islet where warm water from the Fengman reservoir makes thick rime frost coat the trees from late December to early March; one of China's most photographed winter scenes.

The effect, with trees turned into white lace against the sky, is one of the most photographed winter scenes in China. The island itself is a village with farm houses, narrow lanes and riverbank paths, and visitors walk along the embankment and through the village to find vantage points. The best time to see the rime is at dawn, roughly from 6:00 to 10:00, when frost is thickest and light is soft; later in the morning the frost can fall as it warms. Visitors typically spend a half day, leaving Jilin City before sunrise by tour bus or taxi, with the journey taking about one hour. Entry is around CNY 50, with a taxi round trip costing about CNY 150 to 200. Temperatures can fall to about minus 25 degrees Celsius, so heavy layers, insulated boots, hats and spare camera batteries and gloves are essential. Rime depends on the weather, and fog is needed the night before, so local WeChat accounts and guesthouses publish forecasts. The island is busiest at weekends and around the Spring Festival, when photographers crowd the best riverside spots at first light. Outside the rime season the island is a quiet rural spot with little to see, so visits make sense mainly in winter.
