A volcanic gorge of eroded pumice pillars and forested cliffs northwest of the summit, walked on a looping boardwalk.
Changbai Mountain Grand Canyon (Changbaishan Daxiagu) is a volcanic gorge northwest of the summit, in Antu County, Yanbian Prefecture, Jilin Province. Erosion by meltwater and rain over many thousands of years has cut deep through layers of pumice and volcanic ash, leaving a landscape of pale, sculpted pillars, spires and ridges rising among dark conifers and birch. The canyon is walked on a looping boardwalk of about 1.5 km with viewing platforms at several points over the gorge floor, where a stream threads between the rock forms. Visitors typically take two to three hours, including the transfer from Erdaobaihe Town, which is about 30 minutes by taxi or tour shuttle. The canyon is often added as a half-day extension to the Heaven Lake day on the North Slope, but it has a separate gate and a separate ticket of around CNY 80. Because the walk is gentle compared with the summit, it makes a good alternative when cloud or fog covers the crater lake. The best vantage points are the platforms overlooking the main cluster of pumice pillars, which glow warmly in morning and late-afternoon light, and the lower sections where the stream and forest provide contrasting colours. Crowds are lighter than at the Heaven Lake gate, though tour groups concentrate at the main platforms in July and August. Rain makes the steps and boardwalk slick, so shoes with grip are recommended. The canyon is open roughly June to September, and snow closes the area in winter. Early October brings autumn colour to the forest cover surrounding the gorge, though temperatures can already be close to freezing at dawn. Insect repellent can be useful in midsummer around the stream.
