A preserved stretch of the Grand Canal with a Ming-era arched bridge, canal houses and warehouses, part of the 2014 UNESCO Grand Canal listing.
The Qingming Bridge and Grand Canal District is a preserved stretch of the Beijing-Hangzhou Grand Canal in Liangxi District, Wuxi, in China's Jiangsu province. Its centrepiece is the single-arch stone Qingming Bridge, first built in 1581 during the Ming dynasty and rebuilt in later reigns, which spans the canal near its junction with a branch waterway. The surrounding historic quarter forms a Ming and Qing riverside townscape and belongs to the Grand Canal heritage that UNESCO inscribed on the World Heritage List in 2014. For centuries this stretch was a working commercial waterfront. Grain, cocoons, silk and cotton moved through Wuxi on canal boats, and the lanes behind the quay filled with warehouses, guild halls, shops and workshops. The district preserves rows of white-walled, grey-tiled canal houses with stone quays and steps descending to the water, along with old merchant residences and former mill buildings that recall the city's emergence as a centre of the silk and textile trades in the late Qing and Republican periods. Its character is that of a living neighbourhood rather than a sealed monument: residents still occupy many houses, and teahouses, small museums and craft shops occupy others. The bridge and its flanking lanes are best read as an open-air exhibit arranged along the water, with the canal itself as the organising axis and the Nanchang Street and Qingming Street frontages offering a continuous walking route. Conservation work in the early 2000s repaired facades, repaved the quays and removed incompatible later construction, and the area was reopened as a cultural and tourist district. Boat rides on the canal give a view of the arched bridge from below and of the house frontages from the water. Evening illumination of the bridge and quays makes dusk a popular time to visit.

Frequently asked questions
Is there an entrance fee for the Qingming Bridge district?

How long does a visit take?
A walk along the canal and across the bridge usually takes one to two hours, longer with a boat ride and museum stops.
Is the district suitable for children?
Yes. The traffic-free lanes and boat rides suit families, though canal edges lack consistent railings, so young children need supervision.
