The Humble Administrator's Garden (Zhuozheng Yuan) at 178 Northeast Street in Suzhou's Gusu District is the largest of the classical gardens of Jiangsu province, covering about 5.2 hectares. It was laid out in the early 16th century by a retired imperial censor and has been part of the UNESCO World Heritage listing for Suzhou's classical gardens since 1997.

Unlike the compact courtyard gardens elsewhere in the old town, water occupies roughly three-fifths of the site, and pavilions, covered bridges and winding corridors are arranged around a series of connected ponds.

The garden is divided into eastern, central and western sections. The central section is the heart of the design and the part most visitors photograph: lotus-filled ponds, islets planted with bamboo and willow, and halls whose names refer to scholarly virtues. Zigzag bridges and lattice windows frame views of the pagoda and neighbouring rooftops, a technique known as borrowed scenery. The western section has a long winding gallery and a fan-shaped pavilion, while the eastern section is more open, with lawns and mature trees.

Most visitors spend two to three hours, and a slow circuit of the central pond alone takes about an hour. The best photo angles are from the zigzag bridges looking back at the main hall, and from the rockery pavilion on the island, which gives an elevated view across the water. Spring brings azaleas and wisteria, summer brings lotus blossom, and autumn colour and winter plum blossom draw smaller crowds.

Crowds are the main practical issue. Tour groups arrive from about 09:30 and peak between 10:00 and 14:00, and weekends and the Golden Week holidays in early October can be extremely busy, with ticket slots selling out. Arriving at the 07:30 opening, on a weekday, gives the quietest experience. Admission is CNY 90 in peak season (16 April to 30 October) and CNY 70 in the off-season, with reduced fares for students and free entry for children under 1.2 m. Foreign visitors normally book a dated ticket using a passport number through the official WeChat mini-program or Trip.com and must carry the passport for entry. The Suzhou Museum, designed by I. M. Pei, is immediately next door, and Lion Grove Garden is a short walk away, so many itineraries combine all three in one morning.
