Xinjiekou Shopping District

Xinjiekou is the central retail district of Nanjing, in China's Jiangsu province, centred on the roundabout where Zhongshan Road meets Hanzhong Road, across the boundary of Xuanwu and Gulou Districts. It is the city's densest concentration of department stores, shopping malls, and international brand outlets, and it is linked by underground arcades to Xinjiekou Metro station, where Lines 1 and 2 intersect. The goods sold differ from the souvenir-focused streets of the Qinhuai area: this is a district for fashion, cosmetics, electronics, jewellery, watches, homewares, and luxury labels, with prices ranging from affordable domestic brands at about ¥50 up to several thousand yuan and beyond for designer goods. Anchor buildings include Deji Plaza, Nanjing Central Emporium and Golden Eagle World, each with its own character, from upscale luxury to long-established general retail. Products in the major stores are generally genuine and sold at fixed prices, so bargaining is not part of the culture here, although promotions and seasonal sales are frequent. Payment by Alipay and WeChat Pay is standard, and international cards are accepted at many larger stores. Tax-refund services for departing foreign visitors are available at participating stores, subject to minimum spend and passport presentation, and it is worth confirming at the customer service desk. The atmosphere is busy and urban, with heavy foot traffic at weekends and during holiday sales, and the underground passages offer air-conditioned relief in summer and shelter from rain. Food options are plentiful, including food courts in the malls, restaurants on upper floors, bakeries, tea shops, and international chains at street level. The best way to explore is to choose one or two department stores to visit in depth, then use the underground connections to move between them and the Metro without crossing the busy roundabout at street level.
