Xuanwu Lake Park in Xuanwu District is one of the largest urban lakes in Jiangsu province, and its southern and western shores are backed by a surviving stretch of the Ming dynasty city wall of Nanjing. The classic frame combines the lake surface in the foreground, the long grey wall running along the shoreline in the middle distance, and the pagoda-topped slope of Jiming Hill, where Jiming Temple sits, on the skyline.

The temple's yellow walls and the Yaowang Hall pagoda make a strong accent against green hills, especially in spring. The wall and hill lie to the south and southwest of most lakeside vantage points, so sunrise brings soft front light onto the hill from the east across the water, while late afternoon backlights the lake and produces silhouettes and glittering reflections. Side-lit golden hour and calm mornings give the cleanest mirror reflections; a light breeze roughens the surface by midday. The best seasons are April to May, when willows and cherry blossom soften the shoreline, and October to November, when the air is clearer and the trees turn. Summer lotus and haze reduce distant clarity. Crowds are thin at dawn, when local walkers and tai chi groups use the lakeside paths, and heavy on weekends and public holidays, when the lakeside promenades and the wall walkway fill with families. Tripod positions are easy to find along the lakeside paths in the early morning; on the wall itself, narrow walkways make large tripods awkward. The lake park is generally free to enter, while Jiming Temple and the wall walkway have separate small entry arrangements that visitors can confirm on arrival. Drone use is restricted in central Nanjing, and flying over the park and the city wall should not be assumed to be permitted. Restrooms and refreshment stalls are available near the main park entrances and around the temple.
