The Sun Yat-sen Mausoleum lies on the southern slope of Purple Mountain in Xuanwu District, within the Zhongshan Scenic Area of Nanjing, Jiangsu province. Completed in 1929 to a design by architect Lu Yanzhi, it is laid out on an axis climbing the hillside, with a granite stairway of 392 steps divided into terraces and finished with blue-glazed roof tiles on the memorial hall.

The signature frame is the view up or down that axis: the long granite steps leading to the memorial hall, flanked by cypress and pine, with the blue roofs standing out against the hillside. Photographers usually shoot upward from the base near the memorial archway and then again from the top platform, looking back down the staircase toward the city plain. The stairway faces south, so the front of the steps is lit from mid-morning onward, while very early light is softer and casts long shadows across the terraces. The window from about 08:30 to 10:00 offers cooler air, side-angled light and thinner crowds before tour groups arrive. Best seasons are March to May, when the surrounding trees are fresh green, and October to November, when the air is clearer. Summer haze weakens contrast, and midday sun flattens the steps. The site is very busy on weekends and holidays, with the stairway filling with groups, so shooting straight up the axis without people often requires patience or an early start. Entry is by advance reservation, and the mausoleum has historically been free to enter for visitors who book, though visitors should confirm current requirements. The memorial hall interior has photography restrictions, and tripods are impractical on the crowded stairs; a monopod or handheld technique is more realistic. Drones are restricted in Nanjing, particularly around protected heritage sites. Restrooms and refreshment stalls are located near the entrance plaza and at the base of the steps.

Frequently asked questions
