The sycamore avenue near Meiling Palace runs along Zhongshan Ling Road in the Zhongshan Scenic Area of Xuanwu District, Nanjing, in Jiangsu province. The road is lined on both sides by mature plane trees, locally called sycamores, whose interlocking canopies form a tunnel over the asphalt. Meiling Palace itself, a 1930s villa built for Chiang Kai-shek and Soong Mei-ling on the wooded slope, sits nearby and adds historical interest, though the classic photograph is of the tree tunnel rather than the building. The frame is a receding avenue: two dark trunks lines converging to a vanishing point, with a roof of leaves that turns gold and orange in autumn and covers the road with fallen leaves. A telephoto lens compresses the trees and makes the tunnel look denser, while a standard zoom from the centre of the road gives a more natural sense of depth. The road runs roughly east-west along the hillside, so early morning sun filters through the canopy in shafts and produces the glowing, backlit leaf colour photographers seek. The best season is mid-November to early December, when the leaves are golden; earlier in autumn the canopy is still green, and by mid-December much of it has fallen. Fog or light mist on cool mornings adds atmosphere. This is one of the most popular autumn photo spots in Nanjing and it becomes very crowded on weekends in late November, with visitors walking along and across the road, so weekday mornings are much easier. Traffic, buses and cyclists also use the road, and tripods on the roadway are unsafe and may be discouraged; position at the edge or shoot handheld at higher ISO. The road itself is free to walk, but entry to Meiling Palace has its own ticket. Drone use is restricted in the scenic area and central Nanjing. Restrooms and cafes are found near the palace and the Zhongshan scenic entrances.

When to visit

Mid-November to early December on weekday mornings. Light is best when the sun filters through the canopy.

Accessibility

The avenue is a paved road with gentle gradients, so it is reachable without a hike, though the shared traffic and uneven road edges limit comfort for wheelchair users.

Frequently asked questions

When are the sycamore leaves golden?

Mid-November to early December is usually the peak, though timing shifts with the weather each year.

Is the avenue crowded?

It is very busy on autumn weekends. Weekday mornings are far quieter and give cleaner frames.

Can visitors use a tripod on the road?

Tripods on the roadway are unsafe because the road carries traffic. Shooting from the edge or handheld is more practical.
