Nanjing 1912 Block

The Nanjing 1912 Block, on Taiping North Road in Xuanwu District, is a Republican-era themed entertainment quarter and the city's best-known concentration of clubs, bars and live-music venues in Jiangsu province. Grey-brick buildings styled after 1920s and 1930s Nanjing house a mix of nightclubs, lounges, restaurants and cafes around pedestrian squares near the Xuanwu and Xinjiekou side of the city. The crowd skews young, generally 20 to 35, with local students, office workers, domestic visitors and some foreign residents, and it becomes noticeably younger and louder after midnight at the clubs. Dress code is smart-casual for the clubs, with sports sandals and very casual wear discouraged at busier venues, while the bars are relaxed. Music varies by venue: commercial hip-hop, EDM and Mandopop dominate the clubs, while bars host live bands, singers and lounge sets. Drinks programmes centre on imported beer, whisky and vodka sold by the glass or bottle, cocktails and Chinese baijiu mixers, with bar prices in the mid-to-upper range for Nanjing. Bars generally run from about 18:00 to 02:00, and clubs stay open until about 03:00 on weekends; weeknights are quieter and some venues close earlier. Cover charges vary by venue, with some clubs charging ¥50-150 (about $7-22), sometimes redeemable against drinks, and free entry is often offered earlier in the evening. Table reservations are recommended at clubs on Friday and Saturday, and bottle-service packages with minimum spends are the norm for group tables. Visitors should expect a lively, commercial atmosphere and should compare venues before committing, since the block contains many operators of differing quality. The quarter also has restaurants for a pre-club meal, and taxis and ride-hailing pickups are plentiful at closing time. Foreign visitors should carry a passport or other ID, as venues may ask for it at the door, and personal belongings should be watched in crowded rooms.
