Zhonghua Gate to Ming City Wall Ridge Walk

The Zhonghua Gate to Ming City Wall ridge walk follows the top of one of the best-preserved sections of Nanjing's Ming dynasty city wall in Qinhuai District, Jiangsu Province, China. Zhonghua Gate, on Zhonghua Road at the south of the old city, is a fortress-style gateway with multiple courtyards and vaulted chambers built into the wall, and it is often described as one of the largest surviving city gates in China. The walk covers about 3 to 4 kilometres on the wall top and adjoining paths and takes about two hours.

Access is simple. Visitors take Metro Line 1 to Zhonghuamen station and walk about five minutes to the fortress. Wall-top admission is about 50 CNY, and visitors should confirm the current price at the ticket office. There is little dedicated parking, so metro and taxi are the practical choices. No hiking permit is needed.

The route is essentially flat. The wall itself stands about 20 metres high, and visitors climb a set of stairs or ramps to reach the top, after which the path runs along broad brick and stone paving. Exposure is limited, since parapets protect the walkway, but the wall top has almost no shade, so summer heat and sun are the main difficulties. Landmarks include the gate's inner courtyards, the vaulted chambers in the wall base, the crenellated parapets, and views over the Qinhuai River moat and the streets of the old city. Visitors can turn back at any point where a stair descends, or continue along adjoining moat-side paths.

Water and snacks are sold near the entrance, but the wall top has few facilities, so visitors should bring water and sun protection. Shelter is limited to the gate's covered chambers, which are useful during sudden rain. Cool, clear days in spring and autumn are best, and late afternoon light suits photography. Summer midday walks can be punishing, and the stone surface can be slippery when wet.
