Zhan Garden (Zhanyuan)

Zhan Garden (Zhanyuan) is a classical Chinese garden at 128 Zhanyuan Road in Qinhuai District, Nanjing, Jiangsu province, China. Its history stretches back to the early Ming dynasty, when the site was part of the residence of Xu Da, a general who served the Hongwu Emperor, and it is regarded as one of the oldest surviving gardens in Nanjing. In 1853 it became part of the Taiping Heavenly Kingdom's governmental buildings, and it was restored in later periods. The garden is compact but arranged in the Jiangnan tradition, with rockeries, ponds, winding corridors, small pavilions and courtyards. Visitors walk through a sequence of scenes rather than a single open lawn: a central pond with stone bridges and lotus, rockery hills made from Taihu stone, a hall with carved wooden windows and a tea house where locals sit. Highlights include the Mandarin Duck Hall, a wooden building with intricate carvings, and the reflective pools that mirror the roofs and trees. There are also exhibits related to the Taiping history and the garden's former owners. A visit generally takes an hour to an hour and a half. It is lively in spring when plums and cherry trees bloom, and in autumn when foliage colours the rockeries. Weekday mornings are the quietest, and the garden is much less crowded than the nearby Confucius Temple area. The entry ticket costs about ¥30, with children under 1.2 metres free. The garden is roughly a 20-minute walk from Fuzimiao Station on Line 3, or a short taxi ride, and it can be combined with the Laomendong historic quarter and the Confucius Temple. Photographers favour the corridors and pond reflections in soft morning light.
