The Ming Ancestral Tomb, known in Chinese as Ming Zu Ling, is located at Huaihe Town in Xuyi County, Huai'an, Jiangsu province, China, on the north shore of Hongze Lake. It is the cenotaph-style tomb complex built by Zhu Yuanzhang, the founder of the Ming dynasty, for his great-grandfather, grandfather and father, whose original graves in the area had been lost. Construction began in the late 14th century and the site later became part of a larger imperial memorial landscape, recognised among the Ming tombs that are listed as UNESCO World Heritage together with the Ming Dynasty Tombs. The complex follows imperial funerary layout, with a long spirit way lined with stone statues, an inner wall enclosing the tomb mound and the remains of sacrificial halls and gates. Visitors walk the spirit way past stone lions, horses, officials and guardian figures that are among the best preserved of their kind in the region. The site is quiet, with open ground, old trees and views toward the lake, and some structures were submerged by floods in past centuries and later recovered. A visit takes 1.5 to 2 hours. The best photographs are of the stone figure avenue, especially in morning or late afternoon light when the carved surfaces show clear shadows. Crowds are generally very light, even at weekends, because the site is remote from central Huai'an. Getting there takes planning: visitors usually take an intercity bus from Huai'an to Xuyi and then a taxi to Huaihe Town, or hire a car for the day, and should arrange return transport. Visitors interested in Ming history, imperial funerary art or the history of Hongze Lake will find the trip rewarding. Spring and autumn offer the most comfortable weather. Signs and explanation are mostly in Chinese, and facilities are limited, so water and snacks should be brought from town.
