Three Gorges Dam

The Three Gorges Dam Scenic Area near Sandouping Town, Yichang, provides several designated viewing platforms -- including Tanziling and Jitousan -- that look down onto the dam wall, spillway gates, and the five-stage ship lock system, giving photographers a foreground of railing and platform structure against the vast concrete wall and river beyond. Morning light works best here, since the dam faces in a direction where the wall and spillway catch even, front-to-side illumination before midday haze builds over the river valley; by afternoon the air over the reservoir often turns milky, reducing contrast on longer telephoto shots. The June to September flood season is the most dramatic time to visit, when spillway gates open and release dramatic plumes of white water and spray, though the resulting mist can also reduce visibility of the dam wall itself; October and November bring clearer skies and better long-distance visibility for wide dam-and-valley compositions. The scenic area is a major domestic tourism destination and draws large tour groups, particularly at midday, so weekday mornings offer the best chance at an unobstructed platform position at Tanziling, the highest and most photogenic viewpoint. Visitors move between viewing points by a mandatory internal shuttle bus, and a security checkpoint with bag screening is required before entry given the dam's status as a strategic national facility; drone flights are strictly prohibited throughout the scenic area and surrounding airspace. Admission to the scenic area includes shuttle transport between the main viewpoints.
