Jingzhou Museum

Jingzhou Museum, sited just inside the historic Jingzhou city wall, houses one of China's most significant regional collections spanning the Warring States, Qin, and Han periods, roughly the 5th century BCE through the 3rd century CE. The core holdings come from thousands of tombs excavated around Jingzhou, the heartland of the ancient state of Chu, and include lacquerware boxes and coffins with intact original color, bronze ritual vessels, bamboo-slip manuscripts, and a nationally famous collection of silk textiles preserved by the region's waterlogged clay tomb conditions. The centerpiece gallery displays a mummified male corpse from a Han dynasty tomb, remarkably preserved with soft tissue intact, alongside the burial garments and grave goods found with it. The museum building itself is a modern structure completed in the 1990s, purpose-built with climate-controlled cases to protect the organic materials. Curatorially the museum groups objects by material and period rather than strict chronology, with dedicated halls for lacquerware, bronzes, and textiles. Ongoing conservation work on the silk and lacquer collections continues, and the museum is recognized as a first-tier national museum for the quality and completeness of its Chu-culture holdings.
