Chibi Ancient Battlefield (Red Cliff)

The Chibi Ancient Battlefield scenic area sits on a bluff above the Yangtze River in Chibi City, southeastern Hubei, traditionally identified since at least the Tang dynasty as the site of the Battle of Red Cliffs fought in the winter of 208-209 AD. The battle saw the allied southern forces of Sun Quan and Liu Bei defeat the much larger northern army of the warlord Cao Cao, a turning point that prevented the reunification of China under Cao Cao and set the stage for the Three Kingdoms period. The site preserves a red sandstone cliff face bearing large carved characters for Red Cliff, said to have been inscribed by the Song-dynasty official Xu Sheng, along with a Ming-and-Qing-era temple complex dedicated to strategist Zhuge Liang and other figures from the campaign. Reconstructed pavilions, a bronze cannon display, and statuary depicting the battle's key commanders fill the grounds above the cliff. The curatorial approach is narrative and immersive rather than object-based, using the landscape itself, reconstructed fortifications, and interpretive panels to walk visitors through the battle's course, including the famous fire-ship tactic that destroyed Cao Cao's fleet. The temple and pavilion structures have been restored multiple times through the Qing dynasty and again in the 20th century, and the site today functions as a heritage park blending historical interpretation with the surrounding riverside scenery.
