Jianghan Guan Museum (Customs House)

The Jianghan Guan Museum occupies the former Jianghan Customs House, completed in 1924 near the Hankou Bund in Jiang'an District, Wuhan, at the heart of the former Hankou foreign concession district established after the port was opened to foreign trade in 1861. The neoclassical building, topped by a landmark clock tower modeled loosely on British customs architecture of the period, served as the operational headquarters for Hankou's customs administration, which for decades was staffed under the semi-colonial Imperial Maritime Customs Service. The museum's exhibits trace Hankou's transformation from a river-trade town into one of China's principal treaty ports, displaying customs ledgers, shipping records, period photographs of the Bund waterfront, foreign consular buildings, and objects related to the tea, timber, and other export trades that made Hankou a major commercial hub in the late Qing and Republican eras. The building's interior retains original staircases, tiled floors, and window fittings from the 1920s construction, restored during a conservation project in the 2000s that stabilized the clock mechanism and exterior masonry. Curatorially the museum is arranged chronologically, moving from the port's forced opening after the Second Opium War through its peak as a treaty port to its integration into modern Wuhan, using the customs house itself as the primary architectural artifact alongside the document and photograph collections.
