Liangzi Lake

Liangzi Lake sits around 60 kilometres east of Wuhan in Ezhou and is reached in about an hour by long-distance bus from Wuhan's Fujiapo Bus Station or by private car or Didi along the Wuhan-Huanggang corridor. The lake is one of Hubei's larger freshwater lakes and is known locally for pearl cultivation, wetland scenery, and its fishing villages, where traditional cormorant fishing can still occasionally be seen along the quieter shoreline. A typical day trip starts with a mid-morning arrival at the lakefront, followed by a boat trip out onto the open water to see the wetland islets and fish-farming rafts, before returning to shore for a lakeside lunch of freshwater fish; the lake is close to the area associated with Wuchang fish, a dish long served in Hubei cuisine. Afternoons are best spent walking the lakeside paths and visiting the small pearl markets near the fishing villages, where cultured freshwater pearls are sold directly by local farmers at prices well below city jewellery shops. The lake's wetland reed beds and open water are most scenic from September to November, when migratory birds pass through and the water is calmer than during the summer rainy season; early autumn mornings also bring the clearest views across to the low hills on the far shore. Rest stops along the route from Wuhan are limited, so visitors typically eat at one of the lakeside restaurants near the main pier rather than en route, and it is worth timing the visit so lunch falls after the boat trip when the restaurants are least crowded.
