Xiangyang's city wall guards one of China's most historically significant strategic cities, having withstood sieges dating back to the Three Kingdoms period and, most famously, a six-year Mongol siege in the 13th century. The wall, moat, and several restored gate towers still encircle the old town in Xiangcheng District, with free wall-top walking sections and small museums inside some of the gate towers covering the city's military history.

Xiangyang Ancient City Wall

Xiangyang's city wall guards one of China's most historically significant strategic cities, having withstood sieges dating back to the Three Kingdoms period and, most famously, a six-year Mongol siege in the 13th century. The wall, moat, and several restored gate towers still encircle the old town in Xiangcheng District, with free wall-top walking sections and small museums inside some of the gate towers covering the city's military history. A walk along a good stretch of the wall, including a gate tower stop, takes about 2 hours. The wall and its wide moat are illuminated in the evening, when reflections of the lit ramparts on the water make for the most striking views, and the old town below is noticeably quieter after dark than during the day.
