Shennongjia National Park

Shennongjia is a UNESCO-listed forest reserve in northwestern Hubei known for its old-growth forests, golden snub-nosed monkeys, and persistent local legends of a wildman said to inhabit its remote ridges. The park is divided into several distinct zones reached by an included shuttle bus: Shennongding, the highest peak area with alpine meadows and boardwalk trails; the Golden Monkey Valley, where habituated troops of golden snub-nosed monkeys can often be observed at close range; and Dajiuhu, a high wetland basin further from the main entrance. Covering even two or three zones properly requires a full day, and many visitors stay overnight nearby to add a second day for a more remote zone such as Dajiuhu. Heavy winter snow can close upper sections of the park, making May through June, for rhododendron blooms, and September through October, for autumn foliage, the most reliable and scenic windows to visit.

When to visit

May to June for rhododendron blooms, or September to October for autumn foliage; avoid visits during heavy winter snow closures.

Accessibility

Boardwalk sections at Shennongding are relatively flat and manageable, but many trails involve natural, uneven forest terrain that is difficult for wheelchairs.
