Shek O Beach lies at the end of Shek O Road on the far south-eastern corner of Hong Kong Island, in the Southern District of Hong Kong, China. The beach is a broad sweep of light sand at the edge of Shek O village, with a rocky headland at one end and the small island of Tai Tau Chau visible offshore, linked at low tide by a sandbar that draws photographers and casual explorers. The water is usually clear and blue-green in summer, and the bay is more open than the beaches on the sheltered south coast, so small waves are common and swimmers should respect lifeguard flags. A shark prevention net encloses the swimming area. The atmosphere is relaxed and more local than Repulse Bay: families, groups of friends and couples spread out on the sand, while the village behind the beach has a laid-back character with small restaurants and cafes serving Thai, Chinese and Western food. Lifeguards operate during the main season, and the beach has showers, changing rooms and toilets. Surfboards and lessons are available at neighbouring Big Wave Bay, a short walk or drive away. Access is by MTR Island Line to Shau Kei Wan (Exit A3), then bus 9 for about 30 minutes to the Shek O terminus, followed by a five-minute walk to the sand. The fare is about HK$8-10, and the last return buses run until roughly 23:00. Parking in the village is very limited on weekends. The beach also marks the end of the Dragon's Back hiking route for many walkers, who arrive sweaty and finish with a swim. Visits are best planned in the morning to secure a spot, since summer weekends bring large crowds and queues for the return bus. Winter days are quiet and pleasant for walking the headland and village lanes.
