Songji Eight Big Bowls (宋记八大碗)

Songji Eight Big Bowls (宋记八大碗) is a restaurant in the Nanguan Ancient Town district of Zhengding County, Shijiazhuang, in Hebei province. Zhengding was a provincial capital in earlier dynasties, and the Nanguan area is a restored old-town quarter of low buildings and lanes that now draws day-trippers from Shijiazhuang and Beijing. The restaurant serves the local eight-big-bowls banquet (八大碗), a set of braised and steamed dishes traditionally presented in large bowls at weddings, festivals and family gatherings. The format is communal: a table receives a sequence of generous bowls of braised and stewed meats and vegetables, intended to be shared. The signature order is the eight-big-bowls set, priced at roughly 168 to 238 yuan per table, which makes it a good-value way to sample several local preparations at once, and the braised pork belly bowl (扣肉) at about 38 to 48 yuan is often singled out as a standout. The dining room has a traditional old-town feel, with wooden furniture and family-style tables, and the mood is convivial and moderately loud when groups are present. Dress is casual. The beverage list is typical of a regional Chinese restaurant, with tea, beer, baijiu and soft drinks. The restaurant is open from about 10:00 AM to 9:30 PM daily. Reservations are recommended for groups by phone or via Dianping, especially at weekends, while smaller parties can usually walk in. Because the set menu is designed for tables of several diners, solo travellers may prefer to order individual bowls instead.
