Chishui Great Waterfall (Chishui Dapubu) is the main attraction of the Chishui Danxia scenic area in Chishui City, Zunyi, northern Guizhou, and forms part of the Chishui Danxia UNESCO World Heritage listing. The fall is about 76 metres high and roughly 80 metres wide, one of the largest waterfalls in the province, and it plunges from a red sandstone cliff into a deep pool surrounded by dense subtropical forest. The region is known for its red Danxia landforms, and the contrast between the white water, red rock and green vegetation gives the site a distinctive look. Chishui is also notable for its giant bamboo forests and ancient tree ferns, which grow in the humid gorges of the area. Visitors normally walk down a stepped path to a viewing platform near the base, where spray from the fall drenches the area, and some paths lead behind or alongside the water. Nearby are other smaller falls, pools and forest trails that can be explored in a visit of three to four hours. The best time to come is the rainy season from April to September, when the volume of water is greatest, while in dry months the flow thins considerably. Weekday mornings are quieter, and weekend crowds build by midday. Paths are slippery from spray, and a light waterproof layer is useful. Chishui lies on the Chishui River, known in Chinese history and for its liquor-making towns, and the city offers local food including bamboo shoot dishes. The scenic area is reached by bus from Zunyi to Chishui, followed by a taxi of about 40 minutes.
