A high-plateau freshwater lake that is one of China's main wintering grounds for the black-necked crane.
Caohai Nature Reserve is a high-plateau freshwater lake in Weining Yi, Hui and Miao Autonomous County, Bijie, north-western Guizhou, at an elevation of roughly 2,200 metres. It is one of the main wintering grounds in China for the black-necked crane, along with other migratory birds such as bar-headed geese, common cranes and various ducks. The lake is shallow, ringed by marsh, reed beds and farmland, and the surrounding hills are home to Yi, Hui and Miao communities. From about November to March, the reserve fills with wintering birds, and observation points around the lake let visitors watch cranes feeding in the fields and wetlands. Boats operate on the lake for a fee of about CNY 30 to 60, giving closer views of waterfowl and reedbeds, and viewing platforms and paths along the shore provide places to watch and photograph. Visitors usually spend two to four hours, with early morning and late afternoon the best times for birds. Binoculars and a telephoto lens are valuable, as birds keep their distance from people. The weather is cool and often windy, especially in winter, so warm clothing is essential. Outside the migration season the lake is quieter, with local fishing and farming scenes and wetland vegetation. Access is by bus from Bijie or Guiyang to Weining, followed by a taxi of around 15 minutes. The reserve is free to enter, and the town of Weining has basic lodging and restaurants serving local dishes such as potato-based specialities and cured meats.
