Huangyao Ancient Town — Stone Bridges and Lanterns

Huangyao's stone arch bridges span the Hejiang River at several points through the old town, and the bridge nearest the southern entrance is the classic vantage point, framing an arched stone bridge doubled by its own reflection in the still river below, with slate-roofed timber buildings and ancestral halls lining the banks behind it. The most atmospheric light comes at dusk and into blue hour, in the 30-45 minutes spanning sunset, when red lanterns strung along the lanes and bridges are lit but the sky still holds enough residual light to separate building silhouettes from the darkening background; shooting fully after dark loses that separation and leaves the lanterns as isolated points of light against black. Any season works for the town itself, since the architecture and lanterns are the primary subject rather than a landscape scene, though a light rain shower leaves the slate paving and stone bridges wet and more reflective of the lantern light, and the cooler autumn and spring shoulder seasons bring fewer tour groups than the summer holiday peak. Huangyao draws far fewer visitors than Guilin's more famous old towns such as Yangshuo's West Street, so even at dusk a tripod position on the southern bridge is rarely contested outside Chinese national holiday weeks, when domestic tour groups fill the lanes. An entrance ticket is required to access the old town's core scenic area. Tripods are permitted throughout the pedestrian lanes and bridges; drone flights are discouraged over the dense timber rooftops given fire-safety concerns in the historic core.
