Nanning Zhongshan Road Night Market Food Walk

The Nanning Zhongshan Road Night Market Food Walk is a self-organised evening route through the Zhongshan Road night market area, one of Nanning's oldest and most densely packed street food strips. There is no operator running the route; visitors follow a printed map covering roughly six to eight stops along Zhongshan Road and the adjoining lanes. The walk centers on laoyou fen, or old friends noodles, a Nanning specialty of stir-fried rice noodles with pickled sour bamboo, black bean sauce, and chili, tasted at a counter directly on Zhongshan Road. From there the route continues past grilled skewer stalls selling meat, tofu, and vegetables cooked over open charcoal grills, vendors preparing chang fen (stuffed rice noodle rolls) filled with pork or shrimp, and stands pouring sugarcane juice and cutting fresh tropical fruit such as mango and dragon fruit. The balance leans savoury, with the fruit and sugarcane stands providing the only sweet or refreshing counterpoint. Only the laoyou fen tasting is included in the route notes as a fixed stop; all other stalls are optional and paid for individually as visitors choose what looks appealing, typically a few yuan per skewer or roll. Guidance on stall etiquette, such as how to queue and how to signal an order, is included in the route notes, but no spoken-language guide accompanies the walk. Because it is self-directed, group size is not fixed, and dietary substitutions depend on what each individual vendor is able to accommodate rather than being arranged in advance.
