Li River Bamboo Rafting (Xingping Section)

Li River bamboo-style rafting at Xingping is a similarly low-exertion, seated float trip, though on China's most famous river rather than one of its tributaries, and suitable for nearly all ages and fitness levels since a licensed poler steers the motorized raft. No swimming ability or prior experience is required; life jackets are supplied and mandatory. Rafts here are motorized rather than hand-poled, a change local authorities made across most of the main Li River for safety and traffic-control reasons, though the flat-decked bamboo-style design and slow pace remain similar to the traditional version. Passengers need only bring sun protection, a hat, and a bag for valuables; open sandals are more practical than closed shoes since decks can be wet. Rafts operate from Xingping town's riverside dock under a permit system managed by the local tourism authority, which limits the number of rafts on the water and sets standard fare zones rather than licensing any single private company, so the fleet functions as a regulated cooperative. A short safety briefing covers seating position, life jacket fit, and boarding and disembarking procedure at the dock, and staff are stationed at the pier to assist in the rare event of a problem; the river here is wide, slow-moving, and heavily trafficked with other tour boats, and capsizing is not a realistic risk under normal conditions. The route passes the karst scenery depicted on the reverse of the ¥20 banknote, near Xingping's Nine Horses Fresco Hill and Yellow Cloth Shoal, giving it more scenic than sporting value. Best conditions run March through November; spring mornings often bring low mist that settles between the peaks and produces the most photographed light, while the route also runs in winter with clearer but starker views. Rafting can pause temporarily after heavy summer rain raises the river to unsafe levels.
