Shenzhen is a sprawling megacity on China's southern coast, directly across the border from Hong Kong. Transformed from a fishing town of about 30,000 people into a metropolis of over 17 million in four decades, it is China's original Special Economic Zone and the country's leading technology hub, home to Tencent, Huawei, DJI, and thousands of electronics manufacturers.
Shenzhen has a humid subtropical monsoon climate strongly influenced by its coastal position on the South China Sea. Summers (June-September) are long, hot, and humid, with temperatures frequently reaching 32-34°C and heavy monsoon rainfall, plus a real risk of typhoons making landfall or brushing the coast. Winters (December-February) are short and mild, rarely dropping below 10°C, with low humidity and the driest, sunniest weather of the year. Spring (March-May) brings warming temperatures and rising humidity with occasional fog, while autumn (October-November) offers the most comfortable combination of warm days, lower humidity, and clearer skies, making it the most popular season to visit alongside early winter.

The seasons
What to expect in each part of the year.
Spring
Months: Mar-May
Temperatures climb from the high teens to the high 20s Celsius as humidity rises through the season. March and April can bring persistent drizzle and coastal fog, especially in the mornings, while May turns noticeably hotter and more humid as the wet season approaches.
Summer
Months: Jun-Sep
Hot and humid with daytime highs regularly above 32°C and high humidity that makes it feel hotter still. This is also typhoon season, with the South China Sea occasionally sending storms toward the Guangdong coast, particularly in July, August, and September, and heavy monsoon downpours are common through June and July.
Fall
Months: Oct-Nov
Widely regarded as the best season, with warm but no longer oppressive days, falling humidity, and generally clear skies. October opens with the Golden Week national holiday, which brings heavy domestic crowds before conditions become both comfortable and quieter through November.
Winter
Months: Dec-Feb
Mild and comparatively dry, with daytime temperatures typically between 15-20°C and only occasional cold snaps that push lows toward 8-10°C. Chinese New Year (dates vary, typically late January to mid-February) brings a major domestic travel surge and many small businesses close for several days.
