Shenzhen Civic Center

Shenzhen Civic Center is the seat of the municipal government in Futian District, a long, low-slung building topped with a distinctive wave-shaped roof that has become one of the city's recognizable landmarks. The building itself houses government offices and is not open to public touring, but the surrounding plaza is a major public gathering space, flanked by Shenzhen Museum, Shenzhen Library, and Shenzhen Concert Hall, and facing north toward Lianhuashan Park. Visitors come primarily to photograph the roof structure and to use the plaza as a starting point for the surrounding cultural cluster. The scale of the open plaza, combined with fountains and landscaped lawns, makes it a popular spot for evening walks and for kite-flying on weekends. A visit to the plaza itself takes only thirty to forty-five minutes, but it pairs naturally with a half-day covering the museum and Lianhuashan Park nearby. The building and plaza are illuminated at night, when the roof's undulating form is most striking against the skyline behind it, and the reflecting pools in front create mirror shots of the lit facade. Weekday evenings are calmer than weekend evenings, when families and photographers gather in larger numbers for the lit views. The plaza connects directly to Civic Center metro station, making it an easy stop even for a short layover between other Futian sights.
