Gaolan Mountain (Gaolan Shan) rises on the south side of Lanzhou, Gansu Province, and is the city's main green backdrop, reaching roughly 2,000 metres above sea level at its highest points. Its summit areas and upper terraces offer an elevated overlook north across the Yellow River valley, where the river winds between hillsides and the dense city fills the valley floor.

The main frame faces north and northwest, so the city lies below the photographer while the sun sets over the western end of the valley, side-lighting ridges and river bends. Sunset in autumn is the most rewarding time, when the air is dry and clear and long shadows give depth to the valley. Spring can also deliver strong views, while summer haze and winter smog or cloud sometimes reduce visibility, so checking the forecast and air quality before the climb is advisable. A telephoto lens of 100-300 mm compresses river bends and neighbourhoods, and a standard zoom suits panoramic stitching. The mountain is reached by a road and a cable car from the riverside, with trails and steps linking viewing platforms; the walk between platforms adds modest effort. Weekend afternoons draw hikers and local families, but dedicated tripod positions can usually be found away from the main platforms; arriving an hour before sunset allows time to set up. Tripods are generally acceptable on open terraces if they do not obstruct paths. Drone use is restricted around the city and the mountain park and should not be assumed permitted. An entry or cable car fee may apply and should be confirmed on the day. Descending after dark requires a torch or a head lamp, because lighting on the steps can be limited. Water and snacks are available from vendors at lower sections, though supplies near the summit may be limited.
