Shapowei is the old fishing-boat sheltering harbour next to Xiamen University in Siming District, Fujian province, China, and it has become a creative quarter of galleries, studios, bars, record shops and harbourside cafes. The area, around the Daxue Road end of the city, grew up around a typhoon shelter where fishing boats moored, and a number of boats still tie up at the dyke, giving the district a working-harbour atmosphere that distinguishes it from other art zones.

Former warehouses and low brick buildings now hold design studios, independent bookshops, small galleries, coffee roasters and craft beer bars, and the Shapowei Art West Zone is a focus for exhibitions and creative markets. Murals and painted walls decorate several lanes, and the harbour edge has seating areas facing the boats and, across the water, the skyline of Gulangyu. Visitors usually spend one to two hours walking the lanes, browsing shops and stopping for coffee or a drink, and the best photo angles are along the harbour wall with moored boats in the foreground and the island beyond, and down the painted lanes between the studios. The area is open all day, with most shops trading from about 10:00 to 22:00, and it is free to enter. Crowds build in the afternoon and on weekends, particularly around the cafes and at the dyke at sunset, while weekday mornings are quiet but some shops are not yet open. Late afternoon to sunset is the favoured time, when the light is soft and bars begin to open. Shapowei is a short walk from Xiamen University and Nanputuo Temple, making it an easy add-on to a campus visit, and it can be reached by Metro Line 1 to Zhongshan Road followed by a 15-minute taxi, or by a city bus found on Amap.
