Hulishan Fortress is a coastal artillery fort at 2 Zengcuo'an Road, on the southeast tip of Xiamen Island in Siming District, Fujian province, China. Construction began in the 1890s under the late Qing dynasty to guard the entrance to Xiamen harbour, and the fort was completed in 1894. Its centrepiece is an 1891 Krupp 280 mm cannon, made in Germany, which is among the largest surviving guns of its kind in the world, with a barrel of about 14 metres. A walking route crosses the grass-topped ramparts, the sea-facing batteries, the old barracks and the underground passages and magazine, and information boards describe the fort's defence of the coast and its use in later conflicts. Another cannon, a smaller Krupp piece, and a collection of historic weapons and models are shown near the entrance, and a small display introduces the fort's history. Visitors typically spend one to one and a half hours, starting at the main gate and following the circuit along the shoreline walls to the main gun emplacement. The best views are from the seaward ramparts, which look over the Taiwan Strait and toward the Jinmen (Kinmen) islands on clear days, and photographers favour the big gun against the sky and the stone gateways. Crowds are heaviest at midday on weekends and public holidays, when tour groups arrive in numbers, while weekday mornings are noticeably quieter and cooler for walking on the exposed ramparts. Admission is about ¥25-30 (~$4), with reduced rates for students and seniors, and the fort opens daily from about 08:00 to 17:30, depending on the season. It is about a 10-minute walk from Zengcuo'an, so many visitors pair it with an evening meal there, and it can also be reached by city bus to the Hulishan Pao Tai stop, with the current route best checked on Amap.
